Bonfire Night?

If you're looking for a night of chaos, definitely try Lewes on for size on the 5th of Novermber. It happens to be Guy Fawkes Day, or Bonfire Night. I'm not actually sure why it's celebrated the way that it is. Guy Fawkes had planned to blow of the Houses of Parliament, but was caught so it never happened. After being tortured and all the rest, and tattled on everyone else involved, he was hanged.

In celebrations now, people get really crazy and make scarecrow people (used to be 'Guy Fawkes', but now is usually someone like the Pope or something...a lot of people protest and say that it's sacrilegious and all the rest) and stick them in the bonfries to burn. Which is what I don't understand. No one was burned in a bonfire, so why is it Bonfire Night? Must be that crazy British reasoning again.
