myspace quiz day #17

#17.  a book you've read that changed your view on something

i just read chocolat by joanne harris (you know, the movie with johnny depp??).
very good.
very well written.
definitely a thinker.  if you've seen the movie (i didn't even know it was a book first - although most good movies are - until i ran into it accidentally at the library), then you know that a sort of witch/gypsy woman and her daughter move into this really small, conservative town in France.
and everyone in the town is so closed-minded that it takes forever for the woman and her daughter to be accepted into the town.  and when the people finally start accepting them, the pastor of their church (it's a Very small town) still doesn't.  and he doesn't accept the gypsies who sometimes come up the river on their boat for supplies and food and business.
and then a whole bunch of other things happen...

one thing that really made me think was that we are conditioned to believe certain things, and accept certain things, but not others, from birth.  and we get so set in our ways that a change, even one that will change things for the better, is almost incomprehensible - unacceptable.
another thing is that the person in the book who perpetuates all these issues with the gypsies and outsiders, is the pastor (father? preacher? cure`, he was called in the book) the religious head of this town.  the person who is supposed to accept and forgive...well, everything.  and it's sad to me, not that people interpret religion, but how.

anyways.
read the book.  way more in depth that the movie.  although i do like me some johnny depp!
