16 weeks

21. jan

BABY'S SIZE     an avocado! (4.6 inches, 3.5 ounces)

WEIGHT GAIN     still around the same when i do morning weights.  i never believe my ones at my appointments because usually i have worked all night (i almost always gain 5 pounds in a day), and wearing all my clothes, my shoes, etc.

HOW I'M FEELING     i'm back to that "is it real?" place.  the nausea is over (as long as i eat snacks a lot), i'm feeling pretty normal again, i'm poochy - but nothing serious, no movement or anything happening yet (i keep waiting for it!).
right as i turned 16 weeks, i noticed that my back was super tweaky and sore, and my eyes were feeling so dry and itchy.  i just kind of thought both were a result of working.  turns out, those are real symptoms that are starting to pop up.

WHAT I'M EATING     now that the excitement of being able to eat veggies has worn off, i haven't been eating as many.  so this week i'm trying to be super conscious about eating all the right/healthy foods.
i'm still dreaming about the magical dad soup with all the veggies.

HOW I'M CHANGING     i have my first two stretchies.  i knew i would get them, because i'm kind of full of them everywhere else.  if nothing else feels like it's happening, these two little guys are the things telling me i'm still growing a little human!

MOVEMENT     nothing yet, although i kind of wait to feel the "flutters" and "twitches" that people/books say the first movements feel like.  mostly i just feel my belly growling.

SLEEP     even with my three days of work this week, i've slept fabulously.  hopefully that will last!  i have a week off so i can get back to days for a bit and get things done!  (that did not happen.  i took eda for walks and took many, many naps... but my intentions were good).
my hips have been HURTING this week when i sleep.  they normally hurt every now and then (i guess because they are not tiny?  maybe lack of working out?), but normally i just roll over and go back to sleep.  this week, it wakes me up and i have to stretch and do like range of motion stuff.  it's awful.  (i kind of wonder if it's related to the back tweakies?)

THINGS THIS WEEK     already crying on day one of the week.  this reason is pretty valid though:  one of my nights at work, i had to call the doctor on one of my patients because her vitals were looking weird.  they started doing tests, and did a bunch more throughout the day and found out she's really sick.  so she was moved to another unit where they take care of the more acute patients.  even though she was so scared and feeling so awful, she was so thankful to the day nurse and i.  she said we were "badass and we saved her life."  if that doesn't make you cry, then maybe you should try thinking about the cinnamon rolls from Prairie Rose.
i also read a book book this week.  i've been doing a little reading on my kindle lately, but this week i finally got to hold the real thing.  the lost art of keeping secrets by eva rice.  so fabulous.  i bought it after reading it a few years ago and i like to occasionally reread it (which is serious, because i very rarely reread books).

LOOKING FORWARD TO     arley coming home from his cruise.  without me.  when i think about it though, i think it's good that i didn't go because i would probably just get sea sick.  no to nausea!!

FUN FACT     the tiny ear bones are forming, so baby can hear us!

fur babies

oni is still a fatty, lazy bum (unless the back door opens - somehow she is lightning fast at escaping).  we've been letting her out during the day.  she doesn't last long in the winter, but she loves it.  she might not kill us for a few more years if she gets to go outside.

eda is still concerned.  she knows that "thing" means "walk," which is what we say so she won't lose it when we say walk.  thinking about changing the codeword to "cornbread."  want to go on a cornbread?

14. jan

BABY'S SIZE     a navel orange!  (4 inches, 2.5 ounces)

WEIGHT GAIN     maybe a couple pounds.  still hard to tell (especially weighing first thing, and then after a night of work...)

HOW I'M FEELING     better and better.  they say my hormones are going to level out and i won't be as crazy.  i'm telling you, i'm ready to be done with all the "why did you do that?" sending me into a daylong cry stuff.  i think arley is too.

WHAT I'M EATING     i ate mcdonald's on thursday, and can still feel the heartburn.  the one day i forgot to take my heartburn medicine.  boo.

HOW I'M CHANGING     my eczema is going crazy.  it's so.  awful.

MOVEMENT     nothing yet.

SLEEP     at my doctor's appointment i asked about sleeping on my back.  most things you read say by the second trimester, you should start sleeping on sides only.  and i normally do.  but i keep waking up on my back.  both the nurse and the doctor said if i was really serious about it, i could tape a tennis ball to my back...  i think i'll just sleep it out and see what happens.

FAVORITE THINGS THIS WEEK     the doppler couldn't find baby again, so another quick ultrasound.  just for the heart tones, nothing too exciting.  as soon as baby came up on the little screen arley's head was in the way.  so at least one of us got a good look.  baby's heart rate was 143.
also, i went to high tea with a bunch of girls from work to celebrate another girl's and my birthdays this month.  it was pretty fun and pretty fancy.  i'm making arley go back with me.  but in a while, so i don't get into the habit of drinking too much caffeine!

LOOKING FORWARD TO     in a couple more weeks we have the anatomy screen.  or something.  it's the ultrasound where we look at all the anatomy.  by that time baby is pretty proportional and looking like a baby instead of an alien.  a cute alien.  they'll probably give us a bunch more photos too.  yay!

FUN FACT     baby is probably hiccuping, and the legs are now longer than the little arms.

this is actually from 15 weeks and 3 days.  i had to since i barely ever dress up normal.  i do love my yogi pants.  ok, i'll confess:  those are totally yogi pants.  just with boots so they look fancier...

BABY'S SIZE     a lemon!  (about 3.5 inches and 1.5 ounces)

WEIGHT GAIN     still hard to tell.  the scale is different every time i try.

HOW I'M FEELING     i think the nausea is mostly gone.  as long as i don't have an empty stomach.  the other morning at work, i think i went too long without any snacks.  when i got to the break room to grab my stuff to go home, i started heaving and heaving.  no throwing up (still!), just the real hard heaves.  gross.  as soon as i got some juice i was fine.  so i filled up on water and pretty much just chugged the whole way home.
the hormones are hitting hard this week.  everything is SO happy or SO angry or SO sad.  it's making me crazy.  i can just imagine how everyone around me feels.

WHAT I'M EATING     still loving cereal.  but eating mostly everything else too.  steak still doesn't sound good to me.

HOW I'M CHANGING     there is a definite pooch.  i feel like i'm going to barf every time i bend down to tie my shoes.
i have had a couple weird dizzies.  once when i bent down to pet eda, i got really dizzy and stumbled when i stood up.  the other one was similar.  bent down for something and felt super dizzy when i stood up... i will ask the doctor about this!

MOVEMENT     i read that moms who have already had babies can sometimes feel movement around week 14.  i was told that since the placenta is attached near the front, it will probably be a bit longer than average before i can feel any movement.

SLEEP     i can still sleep a LOT if i want to (which is yes).  but i am functional with the regular amount these days.

FAVORITE THINGS THIS WEEK     (i'm starting to think i should have labeled this one just "things this week")
arley is starting to catch on to this crying thing, i think.  whenever something happens on tv or real life or in a song, etc, arley sneakily (so he thinks) side eyes me and waits for it.
all this nursery cleaning (still no nursery in sight) has me all excited to actually turn it into a nursery.  i am currently drawing out to scale plans so i can see how all the things i think i want in there will fit. not overboard at all...
i had my birthday on sunday.  i got some fancy packages from my favorite family (you know, my family), and was so excited to see my lost christmas stocking that, yes, i started crying yet again.

LOOKING FORWARD TO     another appointment on thursday (week 15).  i think no ultrasound this time.  maybe just the doppler to listen to the heart rate (they couldn't find it for more than a second for the last appointment).  so fingers crossed for better luck this time!
nurseries!  they're all i think about.  all i dream about.  all i want to talk about.  i'm sure everyone just LOVES it.

FUN FACT     kidneys are making urine, and liver and spleen are doing their jobs too.  baby is probably sucking its thumb and wiggling its toes.

eda is getting pretty serious about this all.  and i'm 90% sure she has no idea what she's so serious about.

BABY'S SIZE     a peach!

WEIGHT GAIN     my scale still says the same range that it has been the last few weeks...

HOW I'M FEELING     better and better.  still tired though.  lots of aches and pains - weird little cramps when i cough/sneeze, or move a certain way.  they say these are ligaments and muscles and uterus stretching and growing and making room for the little peach.

WHAT I'M EATING     on thursday i ate two RAW carrots!  my first plain, raw veggies that i've liked since the nausea set in at about week 6.  i've even eaten a salad or two!  spinach.  it has been tasting pretty delicious.

HOW I'M CHANGING     same poochy baby belly from last week, it feels like.
at work the other night i walked by this lady who was charting.  she looked up and was just kind of looking at my stomach and said, "oh ya, you're pregnant aren't you?"  i said, "i know, i'm starting to get kind of poochy, huh."  she said, ".........no...?"

MOVEMENT     n/a

SLEEP     still sleeping a lot.  i think it's getting a little excessive.  i felt kind of gross at the beginning of the week, and then i stopped sleeping AS much, and i've felt a lot better.  also, we put a lot more effort than we have been the past week or two in making delicious food, which probably helps.

FAVORITE THINGS THIS WEEK     we have been watching Lord of the Rings, because i think i've only seen one.  and that is unacceptable, according to arley.  we just got through the second one.  it's getting very emotional.  there was a battle, where the bad guys were coming for the good guys, who were in a fortress thing, backed up against a mountain.  it was supposed to be this impenetrable fortress with caves to hide in and everything was no big deal.  but THEN they found out that tens of thousands of the bad guys were coming, and there weren't so many good guys.  so they were just kind of preparing to die.  depressing, i know.  but THEN! the elves came (who were supposed to be leaving to some safe land where they would stay immortal and blah blah). and i couldn't even handle it.  i just started sobbing.
i'm sure you can imagine, but again, arley was completely bewildered.  and he laughed at me very much.

LOOKING FORWARD TO     a nursery.  although kind of sad about the room that it will be going in.  full to the ceiling with crap we don't know what to do with, but don't actually want to get rid of.  my job this week.

FUN FACT     baby has fingerprints!
